Frequently Asked Questions

FULL TIME ONLINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FAQs

Do I need to complete a project?

No, at this point projects have not been implemented in our k-6 program.

How much live instruction will there be?

Our k-6 online courses are live classes. Teachers have daily meetings Tuesday through Thursdays. Mondays are for interventions, so some students may meet with an intervention group 2 or 3 times a week which may include Mondays, but other students may not meet on Mondays at all. Other activities occur on Fridays, some in person.

What are synchronous and asynchronous learning?

Synchronous learning is the type of learning that happens when students and teachers meet together. Asynchronous learning is the type of learning that students do independently. Here at our k-6 Iron Online we only do synchronous learning.

Can I still take some classes at my home boundary school?

Not really, but it has happened.  Because we are set up as a typical k-6 school we do not offer individual classes, so we do not do part time online students.  Though, on occasion a full time Iron Online student has been able to take a class at the home boundary school only if the school/district has approved allowing a student to come.  They are not required to do so by law.  In Iron district we do have 6th graders that have taken Iron online full time and take up to two classes at CVMS or CMS, but only elective type classes.  For example, Band, Orchestra, Choir or art.  This has been dependent on room availability.

Full Time Online: 7-12 SCHOOL FAQs

Do I have to enroll full time?

No. While enrolling full-time is a great option, we understand that it isn’t suitable for everyone. Therefore, students can choose to enroll in our school on a full or part-time (A La Carte FAQ) basis.

Do I have to live in Iron County School District?

No. Iron Online is open to all Utah students. Proof of Utah residence is required when registering.

Can I still take some courses at my home boundary school?

Yes. Students who are full time enrolled in our school are still able to take up to 2 courses from their home boundary school or vice versa.

Can I use my own computer/device?

Yes, however, we highly recommend that students use school-owned devices. It allows our techs to help with tech support, maintenance, and updates, and students benefit from the district's safety and security measures.

How will I get help if I need it?

Your Outreach Coach should be in contact with you on a regular basis, they are a great resource to you for help.  Also, your teacher can be reached by email to ask questions.  We do have coaches that offer a weekly help session for math.

Do I have to work at a certain time?

Our secondary online courses are not a live class.  Teachers have set up classes so students can work at their own pace.  All our high school and middle school classes are asynchronous.

Do I ever have to come to the school?

On occasion a student may need to come into the office or come in for testing. Students are required to come to take end-of-year examinations. At the end of the year, students will need to return Chromebooks.

Do I need to complete a project?

Yes, students are required to complete a project every quarter whether they are full time or part time online.

Why can Middle school/High school only start classes at the new term or quarter?

When students come to Iron Online, they start their quarter fresh. We don't accept transfer grades, we just have them complete the entire quarter's worth of work online regardless of when they join us. If they are competent from their previous learning they can demonstrate that quickly. For this reason it is rarely beneficial to a student to join us midway through a quarter, they start over entirely when in most cases they could have earned at least some credit with less work in their previous school. So the registration deadline is to prevent students and families from putting themselves further behind, hoping that online will help them catch up. Additionally, our coaches and secretaries have a work flow that includes assigning coaches and providing new student orientations that they spend time on early each quarter that they like to move on from to other phases of support after the first couple of weeks.  Our transfer deadline is 10 days into the quarter for these reasons.

Can I still play sports and participate in extracurricular activities?

Yes. Students who enroll in our school can still participate in sports and activities at their boundary school. Eligibility requirements still need to be met.

Where will I graduate from?

Students who enroll full time with us will receive their diploma from Iron Online. If a student wants to graduate from the boundary school, all graduation requirements of that school will need to be met.  Those who enroll part time will receive their diploma from their boundary school.

Do I have to work at a certain time?

Our online courses are not live classes.  Teachers have set up classes so students can work at their own pace.  All of our high school and middle school classes are asynchronous.

Why projects?

The curriculum at Iron Online is very thin on its own without these projects with only four areas of demonstrated competency to receive quarter credit. The project is meant to be a place to apply their learning, deepen their understanding of skills such as research, coming up with solutions, arguments, and critical thinking as well as being assigned to complete tasks that are resistant to cheating and counterfeiting learning.
